To unite and empower area high school students in the commitment to feed the hungry and to promote volunteerism
The Student Hunger Drive is a unique non-profit organization founded in Davenport, Iowa in 1986 to engage high school students in service learning projects that benefit the community. With chapters across the country, The Student Hunger Drive has collected and donated more than 16 million pounds of food valued at more than $25 million since its inception.Locally, the Charlotte-based Carolinas Student Hunger Drive was founded in 2010 and has collected 1,084,182 pounds of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina and its regional food pantry partners, providing 722,788 additional meals for hungry children and families in our community. Each fall, the Carolinas Student Hunger Drive organizes a 6-week competitive food drive in partnership with area school systems to achieve the following goals:
Inspire high school students to servant leadership and philanthropy
Raise the awareness of hunger crisis and food scarcity
Reduce the number of hungry children and families in our communities
The Carolinas Student Hunger Drive is presented by Food Lion Feeds and supported by Snyder’s-Lance, Wells Fargo, Chick-fil-A (Charlotte), Fifth Third Bank, Coca-Cola (Coke Cares), Domino’s, Charlotte Hornets and the Charlotte Checkers.
